Organizers That Were Meant For Something Else

Submitted by: Jessica Ackerman

There are many organizers on the market, each designed to solve a particular organizational problem. However, many times you may find that an organizer designed for one use will actually work equally well for something else. By using organizers creatively you can often devise extremely efficient and economical ways of getting things under control around the home. Using them for other purposes is also a great way of utilizing unused organizers that you may already have. Here are some creative ideas for using organizers in new ways.

Food Organizers for Craft Supplies

Small plastic food containers, spice racks, and canister sets can all be quite useful for storing craft supplies in the hobby room. For example, those small plastic food containers with snap-on lids that stack so nicely in the refrigerator will work equally well for holding beads, sequins, pencils or other craft supplies. These containers are usually clear and stackable, making it easy to see and access your craft supplies. Wall spice racks can be useful for holding glitter, small beads or other supplies that are suitable for storing in small bottles or jars. You can also use these organizers in the basement or garage workshop to hold nails, screws, nuts and bolts, or other small hardware supplies.

New Uses for Paper Organizers

Plastic drawer sets designed to hold standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper are inexpensive, but useful for so much more than storing your printer paper. Try adding one or more sets of these drawers to the craft room, using them to store scrapbook paper, decals, markers, pencils, rubber stamps, and other art supplies. Because these drawer sets are usually stackable, they can make very efficient use of countertop, shelf or desk space. Or, use one or more sets of these drawers in the home office for storing pencils, notebooks, tape, staplers, and other small office supplies. You can also use a set of these drawers to organize office paperwork or even your child’s school projects. Simply assign a drawer to each project, or to each child. This method can work extremely well in home offices that are shared by multiple people to help keep personal work organized and safe.

Creative Ways to Use Drawer Organizers

Inexpensive plastic trays and compartments designed to be used in drawers can also be used in many other creative ways. Use one or more of these on your desktop to organize often-used items such as pencils, erasers or a roll of tape. These plastic organizers also work well in the hobby room to hold bottles of craft paint, specialty scissors, or rubber stamps. In the workroom, use these plastic compartments to organize small hand tools or hardware. Drawer organizers can also be used in the bedroom on the dresser to organize bottles of perfume, nail polish or lotions. Or, add one or more of these plastic compartments to the bathroom vanity counter to organize toiletry, personal care, or bath items. You could even use a separate compartment for each family member to keep these personal care products easily accessible and yet well organized.
